seat lug

I have a 02 ec200 and the seat has pulled the lug off the top of the fuel tank where it holds the front of the seat down.

I was thinking if I screw a credit card sized piece of aluminium to the top of the tank with self tapping screws, and the fix the lug through the alloy.

Is there any reason why I couldn't screw screws into the top of the tank. And if so what size/length could I use?
