Default 450 FSR Tires

G'day All,

I've done a fair bit of homework on this, so am really just asking for real life experience from people with the tire choice that's worked well on their 450 4S.

I'm riding hard rocky trails with lots of ruts, deeply rutted hills, but their are also plenty of muddy bog holes as well.

Also bloody hot if that makes a difference.

I'm a noob rider, so the stock Metzler 6 days have felt good to me, but they have worn quickly, and the knobs are ripping off the front.

The locals and the local bike shop all recommend Pirelli Scorpion MX Extras as apparently they hold up better to these conditions.

I don't really care about road legal as they only travel 2k's max on road to get to the trails, any rides further away it goes on the trailer.

Another point was that the bike shop recommended a 120/100-18 on the rear instead of standard 140/80-18.

Anyone used these on their 2009-2011 450 FSR?

What pressures do you recommend?

Anything you think would be better?

Cheers in advance for your advice.

I don't run anything but Scorpions - they last and provide plenty of grip, especially the front. Normally run ~15psi in both.

+2 on the Scorpion .MX Extra.....running them front and back now.....I don't think I'll ever mount another Dunlop.....ever! My lastest front MX 51 front had to be removed with more than 1/2 the life left, side knobs were cracking at the base......

I've been using the dunnies MX range with good results too. Take the soft tyres into rocks and be prepared to tear knobs though. I find I get a pretty decent run out of the MX51s with good predictable grip. I reccon an MX71 would last even better. The 31's sheered off way too quick (rear) but I often use the MX31 front and it lasts as long as I need.

Pressures around 12-13 front, and 10-12 rear

I wouldn't mind trying the pirellis either. Have a mate who's switched his front as was sick of tearing lugs on the MX31. Haven't asked him how its holding up.

I raced a super rocky / hard packed course this weekend and I am impressed with the Scorpion Extra durability.

I read somewhere that Dunlop has a new offroad line of tires on the way?

Yeah i'm running the MidHard on the front and the Extra on the back, getting about 750kms out of the back and the front is still fine...put them both on at the same time.

Mitas extreme sport (xt 946?) with tubliss at 0,6bar worked for me at the roof and there are plenty of rocks in Lesotho. I believe the mitas guys use Kevlar nanotechnology in their compound to be able to use soft compound and avoid chunking

Wear is good as well, used the same tire for all 3 days at the roof (but I was not on the top ten!)
