Default If you were buying a used GasGas

I'm considering going used.

How many hours typically do you get out of the rod, and crank bearings?

How many times can you do rings on a top end before you have to put in a new sleeve and piston?

What are the most common things that go wrong with these bikes to look for it when purchasing?

if these need replaced what is the typical cost to get it done?

thx

ive had a 01 that i put 4 long seasons on the bike before i did the top end. i ride probably on average 10 hr's a week for 9 or 10 months a year. thats a lot of hr's. i was one of the first guy's to wear out the jet nozzle in the carb to the point that the "regular" jetting was way to rich to even be able to get my bike to start and idle. webmaster jeff will remember the thread/conversations on my bike. i had hundreds of hr's on this ec300,and i only did a bottom end on it out of guilt/ not because it needed it. my last 300 was an 04-another great bike! i did a top end on it after a head gasket blew and i melted the rings into the piston. once again, the bottom end was like new! new piston/rings/gaskets-good to go again. that's one of the main reasons that i bought my 3rd 300 (estart this time-damn it's nice) this winter! you have to sort each of these bikes out to suite yourself, but once you do-there golden!

I would have no issues buying a used bike from its original owner. I'm a firm believer in sticking with one type of oil, whatever it is, for the life of the bike. Buying from an original owner will usually confirm this. 2 stroke these days, as long as not jetted too lean, will get years out of motors and bottom ends. Regardless of the brand.

my 2000 200 got over 10 years on a bottom end. rod and crank bearings are still good. this is a lot of hours....

no sleeve - nikasil. relining costs about $160.
my 2000 200 had no wear on the nikasil after 10 years. piston lasted as long, re-ringed every year or so. piston lands eventually failed. and wrecked cylinder. you can go a long long time before you need to replace.. don't go as long as i did.

I wished I had test my purchase out in an area where I could open it up.
My bike didn't have a complete power band. This is not unheard of and is quite the mystery to solve.

Make sure it rips all the way out in short order.
