Default New toy = huge grin.

I have mentioned in a couple of other threads that this year has been about finding the right bike for me.
Then next year I can have a go at the wobbler class enduros and trials.

I began with a trials bike gg300txt pro, which I still have and adore.
Then a Yammy wr250f, a gg ec 300 and now my newest toy a gg ec 250f.

I have found since I got back into bikes that I just love the electric style of the 4t engines,
that wern't around when I rode kdx's in the 80's.

So I loved the wr's motor but, trying to muscle her round in the tight stuff,
I like, was a big chore.
(although I do love winding her up across open country)

The 300 2t was a real rush, but I knew straight away It would need reactions a lot quicker than mine to get the best out of.

So, now onto the next stage:
A wr250f motor in a light nimble gg frame.

As I put in the other thread, shes a 2010 model yr that was left over and then sold new by gguk in late 011.
A local IOM lad bought it over to the island
( I've been told it's the only one here)
Then after a few couple of months he traded it against a new trials bike at our gg dealer.
She has 450 miles and 4 and half hrs on her.

I spoke to Juan yesterday about a 2012 ec300 that i am thinking of buying,He said that 250f you have rides really nice, i am coming off a WR250, it was a ride allday bike, now seeing your new 250f its got me thinking,
How does it ride against the yam.
Gas Gas are doing ?600 off 2012's so real tempting,
Now ec300 or 250f,
But is the 250f going to feel like my yam.
Cheers V-tec

This one was Juans bike. He has set up the carb and suspension and geared it to 12/50 as he was using it like a trials bike to play with his young fella.

I can't tell you yet 'how' different to the wr it is as I havn't got out on it yet.
The plan is to load the two of them up in the next day or two and then give them a good run.
I'll try to do a sort of report, but I'm only a beginer so it won't be that in depth.

I was offered the chance to have a play out on it this afternoon.
but...
I decided that as I was about to ride an unknown bike for the first time...

I really didn't want to do it with Juan and David Knight and Mr gas gas himself, Steve Colley standing there watching.

Well, I went out last night for a play on Grace (as my better half has named her).
First impression is.. WOW!

I think I may have found the bike for me.
Straight away I found the linear smooth power to be just intuitve to use.

If I had got into 2t enduros, when I came back to off road in 09, then maybe I may have enjoyed their Hit!
As it was though, it was trials bikes that I came back to, so smooth bottom to top (ok, to half throttle) power was what I got used to.
The WR I then got delivered that style of power.
The EC 300 i then added, didn't.
I'm glad I decided to try the gg250f, as the choice was simple, modify the 300 to be something it really dosn't want to be, or find an agile version of the WR.

Anyway, back to the plot.

Engines...
The yammy lump in my WR never really seemed to like the grey wire mod.
It did light her up as the revs hit the spot, but it wasn't as seamless as this GG. (which dosn't have the grey wire to start with.)
This bike pulls like the proverbial freight train.

At the mo she is geared 12/50, which in the type of stuff I ride
(goat like trials stuff ~ I'd like to say extreme, but that would be me just trying to sound heroic)
it's fine for sticking in 1st and just fethering the throttle to make progress.

The wr is 12/48. which in the same terrain makes 1st a little softer to use,
but as the trail opens up it means that 2nd is 'on it' and 3rd just a tad too high.
When I am out on next with the gg and wr back to back I'll see which seems to be the best combo.

The bike did originally have the hydaulic conversion clutch lever on it, but this got broke when the first owner leant 'it' against something sturdier than 'it'.
Juan had put a manual lever on, so at present it is very similer to the Yamy.
The power delivery is such that, like the yammy, you arn't constantly riding the clutch.
You just need to be aware of stalling occasionally, as the motor can't just pick itself up from nothing on a whim.
I have a magura set up that was for the wr so I may try that on her.
Ideally I imagine a rekluse would be the perfect solution.
(short of taping juha salminen to the bars and poking him with a stick when I need to use the clutch)

Chasis...

Some comparisons, I can make between bikes are that the ec250f will loft her front at will, as easily as the ec300.
And a lot easier than the WR.
We're not talking night and day here, just that you can use a handfull to clear objects when you're nearly on them.
With the WR you need to be looking further ahead and lofting sooner.
Or jumping off and clearing the object before the bike catches up.

Cornring and agility comparisons won't mean much to anyone else as I stand up and use peg weighting to do things with the bikes.
The whole 'sitting on the tank with a roost trail behind you' type cornering is as alien to me as the truth is to a polititician.

I can say though that the gg250f is very like the 300 2t in that you don't 'know it's there'.
You just think about where you want to go and the bike is there waiting when you get there.

You really don't notice the extra weight when on the move either.
The bike feels planted and solid.
Like all bikes, bench pressing it can get tiresome.
Although I have ordered a shipment of raw talent, so that should eliviate that concern.
On a similer note, I was suprised to find that the bike runs as well, if not smoother, whilst inverted.
And for quite awhile as well. (it was a long walk back up the hill)

Her susspenders are as you'd expect very good.
The front mazochies (invented spelling) and rear sach are fimer than the WR's kyb's.
The rears of the 300 and the new bike feel the same (as you'd expect).
The fronts are very different.
The sach on the 300 were just brooms with the hair cut off,
the mazy's on the new bike are lush.

Her quirks? None...
only joking, there's loads.

The gg copy of the trail tech unit on the bars may as well be a piece of toast for all it's contributions.
(that'll need looking at, or smearing with jam)

There is no kill switch, you use the ign switch. (if you can find it)
I think a nice big red button on the bar will make me feel better.

The lights don't work.. unless the enging is running.
The lights don't work.. if they are turned on. (err, what!)
If you want to use them, turn them off.
But only when the enging is running.
Got that?
Look it's simple:
Turn the enginge on..
Reach down and turn the map switch off..
Watch in amazement as the lights come on.
You have to love Gassers. lol.

So, first ride summery..
She could well be the perfect combination ~ for me ~
Everyone has different preferences, but I would have to say, for a beginer that wants to grow and progress without a steep lerning curve the gg 250f has all the right characteristics to make it a fun introduction in to the off road world.
(Obviously I have to add the proviso, that being a gasser it will inspire and infuriate in equal measure!

Here's a couple of better pics of her.

Soooo, a year on.
Yes, I still have the 250f.
The quest for the perfect bike for me, (still a beginner, but I don't fall off as much) carried on for the rest of 2012.
I was intending to do some enduros in 2013, but tearing my acl in nov 12 put me out of everything well into this year.

Big change for this year was, I passed my bike test, so was able to get out on the bikes and do some green lanes and trails.
After awhile of this I thought I should upgrade the gg to a bigger 'adventure' type bike, but I am now finding that the smaller nimble size of the 250f is perfect for our tight trails.

I did a thread with some of the updates to the bike awhile ago, but I can't find it so I'll put them here.

I stripped and sorted all the electrics, so she now has proper working lights/horn a trailtech speedo and most importantly milometer.
Along with a remote on the bar.
I fitted a 12v plug which powers the sat nav on the bar.
The combined (and hidden under the throttle) on switch/starter was junked for a key ign and a yammy push start.
She got brake and gear lever snakes.
The sump has a ktm flat plate (drilled) sump guard.
I fitted a fan to the radiator.
She got fork socks.
She got proper hand guards.
I fitted gg lowering arms and dropped the forks so the bike rides 30mm lower.
The seat was shaved to be lower, and will be filled with a softer top foam to prevent monkey butt.
The hydraulic clutch got fitted.
What a huge difference.
Definitely the best thing I've done to her.

The gearing has been left at 12/50 which might seem tall, but it is fine for adventure style trail riding. On the road she sits in top at 50. On the open lanes I drop to 4th and if it gets tight 'n' messy 3rd is great for a bit of snap to lift over stuff.
2nd is for all the stop starting.
For some reason the yammy engine dosn't like 1st to 2nd changes and will miss it and stay in the neutral between on occasions.

So, I would have to say that the 250f is still a fantastic all rounder and my fave bike of the 6 I have somehow managed to fill the garage with.
Before I did my knee, I was converting my txt 300 pro to do the same job as the 250f, (a sort of go anywhere adventure bike that was able to be physically manhandled out of stuff if needed)
But as yet the 250f hasn't been stopped by anything that I thought I would need the txt pro for.
She is now having an easy life being an adventure bike that goes where bmw gs's and big ktms fear to tread.
