Joining case halves, 300

I am going to join the case halves this afternoon. Not try, but will. When I dismantled the case halves, there was evidence of sealing compound on the gasket, common to the right case half. It was not around the complete periphery, rather in certain spots like round the water jacket and the divider between crank and transmission. The manual says nothing regarding case sealant in any location. Here's my question- Does anyone recommend sealant around any specific points? Assuming the halves are flat it should seal properly, but if I can gain a trick before I learn a lesson, I'll do that.

Any suggestions?

I would assemblt it dry.
Just clean the surfaces really well.
