Default needle advice

Hoping I can get a shove in the right direction. I am trying to get rid of a hesitation around 1/4 throttle. The hesitation is basically right before it starts to come on the pipe. I can make it better by leaning the needle clip but it is making the power delivery really pissed off and I want to get rid of the flat spot but keep the tamer mid boost of the richer clip position if that makes sense..

Current set up is 2009 300ec 36mm carb from a ktm (flat top not screw top) , nedw clip 1, 40 pilot, 172 main, 1 3/4 a.s., gnarly pipe, PV shims removed

Ideally I want torque, and a strong but linear power band. I have two other 38mm crabs, one with a divider plate in the outlet bore, various other needles but all different manufacturer codes. I am willing to try whatever but I get lost in the codes and variables. Hoping for a little help. Thanks in advance

Given its a 36mm carb, I'd be looking at doing something similar to what the ktm folk do!

38 NECJ#3 or NEDJ#2.. Maybe 165/168 main jet.. Should be close.

Okay, I need a simple refresher on clips and #'s. #2 is "install the clip in the second groove down from the top" of the needle, yes?

I figured, but I figured that a reminder is helpful.

Nothin wrong with double checking.i had to recheck myself when i ditched the old 4t and got back to my 2t roots.also pays to remember the airscrew is opposite direction to a carb 4t!

Well effectively anyway...technically a 4t is a fuel screw,2t is air screw.
2t screw in for richer/out for leaner-more or less air
4t screw out for richer/in for leaner-more or less fuel
(Just in case its useful!)

I wanted to follow up on this. I ordered the necj and nedj needles and got them today. While I was waiting for them I stuck a n3ch and 38 pilot in there and did like it better than what I had. It still had more hit than I was trying to achieve but I could've lived with it.
Anyway I currently have 38 pilot, necj #2 and 170 main in a 36mm carb. I like it much better. It is strong and linear. The annoying rich spot is gone while riding normal. I will probably try the nedj at some point but very satisfied the way it is.

Thanks again Jakobi
