WR250F 2004 KYB Shock

Straight up. Appologies for the blue thread in the land of gassin!

I'm giving my lass a freshen up, and after 2 days of pounding, penetrating, alternating heat and cool, I finally got the dirty swing arm pivot out. Definitely let that one go too long between service intervals!

Anyways, back on topic. The shock has never been serviced by me, and I doubt it has been by the previous owner either. Its well and truly due due due and ready. The bump stop has disintegrated and there is some cancer at the bottom of the shaft. The shock is still damping well somehow and doesn't leak. It sounds like the perfect opportunity to do some learning, save some coins, and bring my old girl back up to spec without time constraints.

Who would like to help me? Anyone got resources? Parts supply/listing? I'm a total noob.

The other option is send it to an expert, fork out more coins, and have a nice fresh shock return.

It's easy and parts are plentiful, if the shaft is stuffed you looking at around 2 hunge for a whole used shock off eBay, 50 bucks for a bump rubber, 10 for a seal, although kyb can be a bugger to change seals on. It's easier than working on forks. I send you an rt vid.

Easier than forks? No way?? I have your bible here too Simmo. I should have a read and see what that says. The shaft is bung but its also right down the very bottom. IE under the rubber bump. I can fully run the shock through its stroke without any binding, harshness or leaking. I know in an ideal world I should be replacing it, but its my old back up bike thats just getting some cheap love n lube.

That's so weird, my WR back up bike has corrosion on the shaft as well, but works fine.
When I had the forks done not long back the suss guy said it was better to just leave it be, as if he changed the seal it would probably leak afterwards.

That thought had crossed my mind too but I'm only kiddin myself. Unknown service history on it, 14,000kms on the bike. It NEEDS fresh fluids. That and that the only way to get the bump stop on is to pull the shaft.

another way is Race Tech. I think they send you a how-to video with the GoldValve kit. They used to anyway

when i had my wr, i had these guys do forks and shock.. it was very good..

he is a yamaha guru and very good to work with. and it has a rebuild procedure on this page

Bulletproof bikes with reasonable care. If the YZ had EFI to get rid of the hot start issues, I might get one for my son so I could ride it.

Just like KYB has a fork kit with bushings and seals, they have a shock kit with all new wear items. It, too, is 60 or 70 dollars US.

The shock is really straight forward once you figure it out- like everything!

I don't know that you need a gold valve in there- the WR stuff seems just fine on the trail how it is.

Big note here: Make sure you grind the peen off the end of the shaft at about a 45* angle. Don't just zip it off with an impact. The angle is not *necessary* on the KYB, but it is on the Showa- just a good habit to get into...
