Default 2001 EC 300 Suspension set up 200 rider

Hi,

I just sold my 2003 KTM SX 250 and purcased a sweet 2001 Gas Gas Ec 300. It has a WP fork and Olin rear shock. I live in Lake Tahoe my house is at 6429 feet elevation. Most of my riding is between 3500 and 7000 feet elevation, the terrain is rocky and hard packed. I'm wondering if you can help me with initial suspension set up?

1 The bike has White power forks and Olin shocks, I weigh 200 lbs and want to use the bike for fast woods riding.

2 Any ideas on what F/R Springs I should have?

3) Is there any way to tell whats in the bike prior to buying new springs?

4)Any ideas on fork oil ? I hear 5wt or 7 1/2 wt 120mm from the top springs removed.

5) Rear shock: I heard 30mm static bike sag and 103mm of rider sag.

Thanks

Dave

Default 2001 ec 300 suspension

Dave,
I'm your weight and have a 2001 300. The stock fork springs are .42. I sent my forks to Les at LTR for a revalve, the midstroke is too harsh unless yours have already been revalved. Anyway, I still have the specs from Les-springs,
.44, preload 5mm, rebound 12 out, comp low 15 out, oil height 140 mm, 5 wt oil. This was done several years ago but may still be helpful. I did not modify the rear shock but use LTR linkage, 124 or 126, I forget. Hope this helps.

Default Thank you very much

Hi,

Thanks for the words of wisdom. One last question, is there any way to tell what fork and shock Spring are on my bike? They might have been changed at one point? Also do you know where I can find the best deal on after market fork and rear shock springs?

Thanks

Dave

Default 2001 EC300 Suspension

My stock fork springs had 42 inscribed very small at one end of the spring. Can't help on the shock, hopefully someone will chime in.
I recommend LTR or GoFasters for your GasGas needs.

Have you checked with North Tahoe Motorsports in Incline Village who is a sponsor of this site. They are in your back yard, I'll bet they can help you out and give you a place to get parts locally. They even may know the history on that bike.

The stock WP forks need help. I had my suspension sponsor change my valving 3 or 4 times. As I picked up speed and confidence, my riding changed and therefore my suspension had to follow. Basically, I would ride the bike until I took the suspension in for service and then explain what the bike did right and wrong, and what I wanted out of the bike. It's pretty sweet now as long as you set the compression for your speed. Fortunately, the '05 with the Ohlins forks is still better by a good margin. I did add 1 stiffer fork spring and high/low speed compression adjusters available from Ohlins.
