Default 04_09_2011 Colorado 1st Ride In Mountains

Well, the real riding season has started here in Colorado for us older folks! I had the chance to take out my 2000 EC300 after finally sorting my RB Designs head mod and carb mods...Once I finally found the problem I was able to actually start noticing some differences with the mods email me if you want some more info but now to the ride: After fixing bikes in the morning two of decided to go to Lefthand Canyon just outside of Boulder, Co. If you never have ridden there four words describe it: Steep, rocky, steeper, and rockier! I've been told a world trials round was held there 30 or more years ago and I believe it! It was a difficult first ride but we had fun once we decided to stick to the narrow 4wd roads and quit picking our bikes up on the singletrack! Overall, a good time on a bike that finally works right! Take a look at the pics and you will see the closest real trail to where I live (about 30 minutes). Notice in the last picture the burns from the fire earlier this year...Because of the fire they have closed a lot of the single track...Especially "carnage canyon" trail where I got stuck last year and almost needed search and rescue!

Eric

Nice pics, I still haven't been over there since the fire a couple months ago. You'll have to come ride with us over in the Switzerland Trail area (I live right there). A lot of the best single track is still under snow though. Another month of warmer weather ought to clear it up.

...Why isn't there a "Rocky Mountain" section??

Let me know when your trails open and I will join you! I wondered about the Rocky Mountain thing, too but I resigned myself to using the Central region as I live east of the Rockies! By the way, did I hear you did a topend on your bike? Billy described the bike and I thought it was yours (my old one)...

Thats right, I'm putting it back together right now. The cylinder was in pretty bad shape and the power valve was almost completely carbon-ed up -- no wonder there was a power issue... I'll be machining the head down to correct the squish also as its quite large right now.

Hopefully this along with revalved suspension and a steering damper will make a pretty sweet bike.

In the mean time, I'm having fun on my XR250 beater bike.

Hi Mudwasp, I was Eric's riding buddy that day (cotrailrider (Bob)). Anyway, I Googled the elevation for nearby Jamestown. It's just under 7,000 ft. I suspect the riding area for Lefthand Canyon is between 6500 and 8500 ft. The ride was almost bone dry.

If you are looking for early mountain riding - On the I-70 corridor, McCoy is open now, provided the storms today and this weekend miss it, and Bocco Mtn and Gypsum should be open in a couple of weeks. Along I-25, Texas Creek, Canon City OHV area, and Tanner's and Stultz should be wide open, with Cuchara and Captain Jack's still a few weeks out.

The snow seems to be melting fast- maybe i better put my studded tires on so it melts faster!
I'm in Ft Collins-woke up to about the same thing. We are having our forest service insiders get info for us about the redfeather area. Heaven forbid we actually drive up there ourselves!

'Sledder: When things melt up your way let me know and I will swing on up!

'Wasp: If you have not made it up to Lefthand Canyon you should but it is a tough ride...Our (me and cotrailrider) biggest advantage up there is that we are both 6'2" which helps in steep terrain.

BTW, the mountains are open as indicated above and we are going to Rampart this Sunday morning. Anyone can send me a PM if you are interested in going and I can give you the details (no GGs required but there will be at least two us on them!).
