Default Subframe Material

Anyone know what the subframe for an 02 is made of? Mine needs to be repaired and I can have it done for free by a friend as long as I do the legwork on what sort of material to use.

Pretty sure it's Aluminium. It's not steel that's for sure - mine (03) has a crack and I was going to run some weld along it today but on testing with a magnet it wasn't magnetic and I don't have Aluminium wire and gas.

Might try some of that Lumiweld - anyone used it?

I think he knows its aluminum, the alloy is the question. We had a very good welder where I work at one time. He had some TIG filler rods that he used when the alloy was not known, they worked very well.

A wet noodle is stronger than the pre '07
sub-frame.

I think the problem is aggrevated by the support loop. I know you guys need the lights and plate holder, but if you could devise a plastic support that will flex a little it may help. The bending problems I had were all related to that loop on my '03.

My subframe was worn/cracked, and I just bought some "standard" AL welding rod, and just TIG welded it myself. I am a hack welder, and it was no problem to fix it.

Those subframes are light, but not very sturdy.

I only have a MIG and buying Al gas and wire is expensive for one small job. I'm going to try that Lumiweld stuff.

I have the same question re: my 11' sub frame. The 4 welded attachment points for the battery tray have broken off. I have a friend who can do the welding but I'd like to bring him the right materials. Also what kind of electronics need to be disconnected? I think the CDI needs to be unhooked, but I don't really know what it looks like on this bike?
