2006 exhaust has a Catalytic converter?
Do the stock gasgas pipes have a Catalytic converter inside?
I think mine has (euro bike). Can I cut the pipe, remove it, TIG weld it back together? Will it improve torque / HP, do I need a new trim? Thank you! |

Some Euro bikes do but I don't think they made it into the USA. Do a search on this forum for "converter", someone removed the cat and posted pictures of their reweld. Turned out real good.
Seems the cat pipes have a pipe plug or something towards the front of them.

I have an 06. Didn't think it had a cat - this plug pipe what does it look like? I have a little pipe with a bolt in it near the exhaust port end - I assumed that was for putting a CO2 or O2 sensor in for trimming?

Mine has that plug to...
I think there is a converter in the ?midpipe?. (Pipe above the clutch).. There is a number on that pipe: /3fs06-1 E9 That pipe is a bit wider in the middle.. The search didn't help me.. |

I thought cats needed to be quite big and were pretty obvious on a 4 stroke but I don't really know. On my road bike it has a huge bulge for the cat but then again it's a larger engine.

My (Canadian) '06 EC300 came with such a pipe in addition to the non-catalytic pipe. As a spare, I modified the cat-pipe as you described; I scored the pipe perpendicular to my cut-line, sawed through the pipe, removed the catalytic canister (about 6cm in diameter and 7cm in height), realigned the pipe pieces using the score-lines, and then welded everything back up. I also removed and plugged the other smaller (5mm) pipe near the exhaust flange mount. Pretty obvious and easy.
The "mistake" I made was that I made my cut too high on the pipe and ended up cutting through the cat-canister; that's hard material and took forever (even with an electric bandsaw! ). Now after a little work and a splash of paint I have a spare pipe waiting for me in the basement. |
