Default Muffler issue

My bike is 2009 EC300 Racing. The muffler rivets do not last long...

Are the muffler bolts supposed to be left loose or wound in tight? Any other pointers, please?

Muffler bolts should be tight.

Thanks.

I've had them tight. Just wanted to be sure since the nuts are nylocks...

Are the rubber inserts and sleeves intact?

I guess they were okay last time I riveted and installed the muffler. I did not notice any greater misalignment (no need to deflect the muffler to be able to insert the bolts).

The bike is still in winter storage; most probably I'll take it out one of these days and will check the rubber parts. I'll let you know.

I may have found the culprit: the rear bolt of the main pipe was missing. Let's see if the rivets last longer now...

Regarding the sound absorbing stuff inside the muffler, it's kinda flat...

- what material is it?
- are there instructions available on how to stuff the silencer?

You don't stuff it, you wrap it around the core of the silencer, then hold it in place with a little bit of tape. Then slide the core back inside the housing .

I got a repacking kit from Fly Racing for my FMF equiped XC 200. It was reasonably priced and had good instructions included.

Most of the suppliers of repacking kits are pretty much the same, probably. Just find something that's available in your area.

Aluminum rivets don't tend to last all that long on bike silencers, if that's what you used. Next time try stainless steel rivets.... much stronger!
