Default '03 DE300 Vin help (10th digit is a D?)

Hey guys, I'm trying to get my 2003 DE300 insured and they are kicking back my VIN as invalid.

My VIN shows as - VTREC3000D1026004 - on the neck of the bike.

The one in question is the "D" in the 10th digit? I know 10th digit is supposed to represent the year, but D was used for 1983? This should be a 3 since its a 2003. And the 9th digit which is the check digit doesn't check out?

See for yourself? What do you think?

gas gas vins are different... i pulled this from an old thread the go faster's guys put on here. I know i had a 2000 and the 10th digit was an A..
would have to look at my 01 for sure, don't remember..

Hope this helps, I thought I had posted this once before..guess not.

VTREC2000D0134023

VTR EC2000 D 01 3 4023
bike model year code month year serie number

The year code starts on 2000 with letter A. So, 2008 models are J. Letter "I" is not included in order to avoid any misunderstanding.
So, in this case, the bike is an Enduro 200 from 2003, made on January 2003.

HOWEVER!!! Some models from 01 to 03 were brought into the US as XC's. Then you go by the 8th and 9th numbers as the year code....Example VTRXC2501 would indicate it was a XC 250 year model 01. Send me a private email if you have any questions.

Thanks, that makes sense.

I was confused because I did own an '01 XC and the VIN on it was setup differently, but that makes sense from your explanation.

I think this will smooth over my insurance folks!

I got an original MSO when I bought the bike. (Although I can't find it at the moment! )

I was really just trying to insure it against theft, but when I find where I placed the MSO in a "safe place" I can't find, I might try mp hand at getting a title for it.

Nh is very easy to register a dirt bike ....
when I went to reg my 06 300 (new) the girl was lost about what to do with it?? Gas Gas uses a european vin system. Most of the states are on the same dmv software which is set up for a us vin number system. Your european vin will tell the us system that your bike is from the 1980's or something like that. this will not jive with other info on the paper work and it will get bounced. In NH I got the bike titled first. Someone at the state level knew what they were doing and it went in under a unconventional vin. When I went to city hall the second time it was loaded into the computer and I sailed right through. I think gas gas has changed vins on bikes coming to america to meet american vins these days

I bet the insurance company is looking at it like it is an american vin, probably have the same dmv software everyone else is running??

This is probably what got wbagwell's CA title confiscated, and forced him to part out his bike. A 2002 frame with title I'm looking at returns similar results.

I guess it depends on who at a CA DMV runs it. The wrong person could make for a very bad day for you out here.

Interesting stuff here and it made me realize I have not received my title from the DMV from when I registered my 07 GG in MA. As usual my insurance co. asked a ton of questions about the weird bike but when I went to the DMV with the MSO it did go through (not without questions again) and I got my plate....but they never sent me the title. Exact same thing happened with my KTM 625 SXC. DMV never sent it and then when I wanted to sell the bike I realized this. Luckily in this case I had kept a full copy of a previous NY registration from the PO so when I went to the DMV they had a supervisor look that over and decided it must be ok and released the hold that had been put on getting the title processed. I'm sure my GG now has a hold on the title process because of the strange euro VIN #. Time to go back to work with the DMV
