Default Website tuning....

I spent the last couple of days working on the linux server that hosts this website - it's in "my garage" - okay actually a storage room behind my garage... I noticed it was more of a performance issue with the machine/software versus the internet connection speed....

I have made some changes that should make it noticeably faster and more responsive.

If you notice anything strange or it "hangs", etc. - please drop me a private message or reply to this thread.

Thanks,
Jeff

It works alot better now, thanks. Previously, every 4th or so request would time out for me.

good job.

Hmmm.. Still not good enough though - kinda zippy most times and "thinks a bit too long" other times... I'll tweak it a little more tonight.

Traffic has literally doubled here in the last year and I think it will pick up much more as Clay starts shipping those shiny new bikes that just arrived.

Thanks Guys...

Jeff, what parms have you been adjusting? Sorry, the geek in me has to ask. I have been running lightspeed server on centos and it seems pretty solid.

This website uses apache, php and mysql - running under suse linux.

The main gains came from tweaking the mysql params. I tweaked the apache webserver prior to that...

I have thought about moving off to a commercial "virtual private server" - but would rather build a new server with more RAM than they provide.

I am now leaning towards upgrading my business level internet connection into my home for faster upload speeds to service the website along with upgrading the server. We are currently 700k up and I can get comcast business internet with 2M up.

I do have to say I am not an IT professional - I am electrical engineer who figures things out as I go...
