Funny, I was just about to post a similar question but just reversed.

I interested in upgrading my plastics on my 2001 bike. I have found some kits from Cemoto for the 2004-2006 model years. I hope that they will fit on the earlier bikes. Can anyone confirm if the mounting locations for the fenders, shrouds, and side panels have remained the same from 2001 to 2006?

I put '05 side panels on my '01. Kept the '01 air box cover.
Had to do some minor grinding where the side panels met the rear fender.
I don't think the radiator shrouds would fit. The mounts are different at the gas tank.
The '01 fenders are better looking, I think.

I forgot about my newer side panels. They are white and think from 05 or 06. I also had to do some grinding to get the panels to mate to the 01 subframe rails.

D251Man,
I would guess the 01 side panels would bolt up much easier than we had to do. The 01 panels have a flater profile on the inside and should mate up to your 04 bike easier. Not sure on the air box cover though... mine is also an 01 cover with my newer side panels. I would think the fenders would bolt on with maybe minor tweaks to the rear fender. However, it sounds like the shrouds will be an issue.
