Crankshaft seal question
I know this should probably be over on the two stroke forum, but I was hoping to get a quick answer before I made too many promises about fixing a bike for Christmas! Does anyone know if either or both of the crankshaft seals on a 1999 XC 300 can be changed without splitting the cases? It's spitting spooge and white smoke like crazy, so I'm assuming a crankshaft seal on the tranny side. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Yes, no problem, both come out from the outside. Drive the new ones in flush, no more, and also change the o-ring on the primary side sleeve.

Yes, it can be done. That's a lot easier job than pulling the engine out and splitting the cases. I understand your desire to find this out.

Thanks for the quick responses. I've had the gasser sitting up for almost a year and my son's bike just trashed an engine, so I'm thinking of going ahead and getting the 300 out of retirement. It's blowing white smoke and spooging badly, just started doing this after not been ridden for quite some time. So it's either rebuild his, or put him on the gasser and get it running right.
