Counter shaft Sprocket Seal

A couple weeks ago I was out riding and I had to cross a marsh area, anyway, the chain collected a bunch of grass/vines and was wrapped around the counter shaft sprocket. I cleaned the bike, removed the sprocket and pulled out all the "stuff" behind the sprocket. The seal and cases looked dry, howerver last weekend after a short ride I noticed some weeping of oil behind the seal onto the case. Today after a race I noticed again I had weeping behind the sprocket. Now, looks like I need to replaced the c/s seal, can that be done w/out spliting the case?

You don't have to split the case.

All you have to do is, take a sheet metal screw and screw it into the seal(use a cordless drill). Then pull it out with a pair of pliers.

Insert the tip of a knife inside the steel lip and pry it out.

Do yourself a favor and replace the sleeve and o-ring on the countershaft as well. It will be grooved slightly especially on a '99. What I think will be the biggest PIA is getting the sleeve off the countershaft if its been on there for years. Once you get the sleeve off the seal is easy, you can pop it out with an offset screwdriver.

Thanks for the help. Yes, as far as I know this will be the first time the seal has been replaced. I will also take a look at the sleeve and "o"ring. Again thanks.
