Gearing down an XC 300
Does anyone run a 12 on the counter shaft versus a larger rear? Which is better on the 300?

On the advice of the local authorities, I now have a 12 on the front. Works great and not too hard on the wallet!

Better for wallet is 12/48 (can use stock chain)
Better for your chain and sprockets is 13/52 (needs new chain) Same 4:1 ratio, so its your choice. 13/52 for me.

Thats really low for a 300. I've always run 13/52 on my 250s, but my '07 runs very strong with the head cut and this is borderline low now. 13/50 is a good ratio for a 300 in tight woods, hills.

May I ask where you got the 12? Is it available at common stores like Cycle Gear, or is it a GG only part?

I just did the same thing on my 300. the stock gearing seemed way too high, only rode it on the street so far but already feels much better. 13/50 would probably be ok but i needed a front sprocket bad and my 48t rear was in perfect shape. so just tried a 12t and like it so far.

Note: yes the above combo wears your chain faster since there is less teeth in contact at any given time on the front. 13/52 is the better way to do it. If i like this gearing when i need new chain and sprockets I will do 13/52

I'll tell it might be cheaper to put a 12t on the front but you should really think of going up in the back.
I run 13/52. And just love it. FYI These SuperSpox are Std. OEM on the 2011 6 days.

Any GG dealership that uses Parts Unlimited can get you sprockets. Moose makes front and rear. Front sell for around $16 and rears about $56.
