I had a 96 KTM 250EXC that did exactly what your bike was doing. Bike would run great from idle to 3/4 throttle, then miss and generally run like crap at WOT. I chased the problem looking at the carb, powervalve, and stator/coil. When I had just about given up I found a guy with the same bike who lived an hour a way and in exchange for a case of beer he let me try his CDI for a day. Bingo, was a heck of a problem to chase and I was lucky to find someone who let me borrow such an important part off his bike to try before buy. At $500 for a CDI (KTM's were still fairly rare back then), it was nice to determine the fix before dumping oodles of cash at the bike chasing the problem. My bike never did flat out quit on me though, it would always run fine under 3/4 throttle. Just an idea

I'm confident I've found the problem:

Now what? Obviously replace the reeds, but I would assume a chunk of the reed is in the crankcase. Might have to split the case to get it out?

i would assume the reed is long gone - out the exhaust. no need to split cases.

That's what I wanted to hear!
Looking in the exhaust port and spark plug hole there appears to be no bore or piston damage, but that's hardly a comprehensive check.

i'm surprised it even idles
mine idles very poor, like no compression, but when measuring compression, it shows over 200psi !

i'm surprised you could start the bike with a reed broken like that. usually they are impossible to start/keep running with even a minor reed issue.

FWIW, I had a Yamaha Blaster here in the shop with a complaint of starts & idle but won't take throttle- It had the V-Force reed setup and the owner had lost the center piece that holds the reeds in the holder. Would start right up and idle but wouldn't take throttle with the whole upper reed laying loose in the intake tract

It took a bit of kicking but it'd start ok.
In any case, it's a bit of a relief to find an obvious mechanical problem than the prospect of chasing down a CDI or something like that.

I found the remainder of the broken reed in the airboot!
When it initially died on me it was on a big throttle section so I wonder if it blew back through the carby and has been there ever since.

Just as a follow up, new reeds fixed the issues. I think they've been in bad shape for a while based on how well it runs now.
