Stripped bottom of Ohlins

I stripped out the bottom attachment of Ohlins shock. There is mention of a kit to repair. Will try and contact Ohlins today. Anybody else done this. I was using the torque rachet but went a little too much.

According to Jerry at Ohlins USA its fairly common, hence the repair kit. Its basically a steel insert for the stripped thread side of the clevis. If your using anti-seize on the bolts (you should), the torque should be 20 - 30% less than a dry bolt.

I was always scared tightening that bolt for fear of what you did. Good luck with the repair.

I talked to Ohlins and got a email from Jerry. He was not aware of a "kit" to fix the stripped out clevis. A friend knew of a first rate machine shop and took it there. They put in a heli-coil and it looks perfect. It is a stainless steel insert. Probably the same thing as the "kit" from Ohlins. The machine shop states this is stronger than just the aluminum threads. Will give a report when put back together. However be gentle with this bolt. It doesnt take much. Final cost 50$ and feeling stupid.

Is there any reason to not use a slightly longer bolt, and a nut on the far side of the clevis? I discovered the source of the rear suspension play in my bike this afternoon, when I removed the shock bolt and the threads from the hole came with it.

Well thats pretty damn strange because a few years ago they sure knew of it.

With your Helicoil fix is the inside of the clevis smooth and flush? The cup washers are a compression fit and it will be next to impossible to assemble it if anything protrudes on the inside of the clevis.

I just finished putting the shock back on and no problems. I made sure the machine shop understood the importance of the heli-coil being flush with the clevis. I am waiting for my carb to come back from R-B designs. Looking forwards to another trouble free racing season.

Regarding using a longer bolt , that will not work because of the lack of space due to linkage. Thanks for all the input.
