Future of Two Strokes

I agree the future is none too bright for two strokes. Kawasaki has dropped the KX250 from its 2008 NA line-up.

On the technology side..
In order to reduce two stroke emissions the fuel mixture needs to be directly injected into the cylinder after the exhaust port closes. Direct injection also benefits four strokes. Mazda has a production DI system in the CX-7.

There are some challenges with direct injected 2 strokes.

Some two strokes have successfully utilized a semi-direct injection, where the fuel is injected into the transfer ports.

Most certainly. Wrist pin lubrication comes to mind.

However, if Aprilia can pull it off on a scooter then the Big-5 should be able to manage something larger.
