Question 2002 EC250 Piston Selection

Hey all, I'm about to do my first top end job on my EC250, and I'm looking towards a Vertex piston unless somebody can recommend a piston that wears better (my bike is getting road registered and will be logging more hours than most so I'm looking for maximum life out of the piston)

My real question:
Is there any way to know if I need an A, B, or C piston without actually ripping the top end off first and measuring?

I'm out in the country and I'll need to order my piston online, and I don't like the idea of the downtime the bike will have with the head off while I'm waiting for a piston to ship, but if standard procedure is to remove everything and measure before I buy then I will do that.

Thanks for the help!

Usually there is a letter A, B or C stamped into the cylinder. On my 15 200 it is placed close to the base facing rearwards.
