check and see if trans bearings or shift rod pins are bound up.

Usually on a conventional 2 stroke you need to give the side of the crank a smart tap with a hammer to float the bearings, I mean don't be silly but you should hear a crack.

Now I haven't pulled a GG down that far but think one side is roller so not so applicable.

Oh hold on you say it is loose there. Try give it a tap on that side. Did use C3 or C4 bearings yeah?

Make sure the right side seal is all of the way installed. If I remember the gasser correctly, the seal goes from the inside out, if it isn't fully seated then the crank will drag on it.

No, seal presses in from the ouside, but must not go past flush(no shoulder in bore) or can block oil hole. It sounds like you might have not seated the roller bearing race on the left side crank half completely, or one of the bearings is not completely seated in the cases. There is obvious axial preload across the bearings. Don't force anything, take it apart and look carefully, start measuring.

Sorry, was confused with CR85 that I rebuilt recently. They all look the same after a certain point. Especially when comparing a wee 85 with the 300. So similar...
