front tires
Anybody use a trials tire up front? How do they do? If no whats the best front tire for holding the ground?

The best tire usually depends on the moisture and or terrain. In Minnesota and most of the mid west it's a toss up between soft/ mud tire and an intermediate tire. I've used both though I lean towards the soft/ mud since I don't race anymore. I would definetly use a brand name tire and there are plenty to choose from. I've heard mixed reviews for the trials tires on the front, any 'Gassers out there using a front trials?

Yes, have ran a michilen trials up front(as well as rear) loved it!
wear's like iron, the front rim does not ding like I thought it would(10 psi) never got a pich flat, In arizona no less! was mediocre in mud. Fantatstic in water, esp. where moss covers the rocks. In corners if did great as long as you were not on grass or pine needles(yes we have pine trees in Az.) Never got a pinch flat but did run the heaviest tube poss. Where it was superior, was the ability to climb out of a rut, any rut! |

i run a trials bike as a trail bike all the time. the front trials tire will affect your cornering ability, but you get amazing slow speed handling, it will go where you point it. you will no longer be stuck in ruts...you will find yourself actually aiming for the bad lines.....playing in and out of ruts...
bad stuff: terrible in the mud, tire will not clean out, and it kinda skates a bit. also, it will break loose early in hard fast cornering, kinda unnerving..... if you ride fast and loose, you'll hate it. if you ride hard technical stuff, you'll love it, you'll wonder why you don't just ride a trials bike.. for non trials tires the m12/s12 are hard to beat - but expensive and wear out quickly... Don't use a trials tyre up front if you ever ride on soft or wet ground. It will just push the front all over the place. For sloppy ground I love the Michelin Comp 4. It's a road legal FIM version of the S12.

The Michelin Enduro Comp MS (DOT) [same as the Michelin Starcross MS3] is my top pick for a front tire. It has great versatility and lasts much longer than a Pirelli Scorpion Pro.
