Unhappy What's the frame material? And can it be welded?

Hey folks,

I was doing some routine maintenance on my 2006 EC300 and I found that the threaded insert for the exhaust hanger has broken free of the frame. By "exhaust hanger" I mean the piece composed of two metal plates connected by a rubber bushing, and which secures the rear of the expansion chamber to the frame. What's really odd is that I went out of my way to shim the mounting bolts with stacked washers so that there would be no side loads on the connection between the pipe and the frame, and it still broke.

The frame does attract a magnet, so it must be some type of steel. But I'm sure the machinist will want to know "What type of steel?".

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

FYI, the insert was held in place with only two tiny "spot" welds.

Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, how did you repair it?

Thanks.

Dale

I believe the frame is a chromoly alloy. Someone else might know more.

As fas I know the main frame is 4130 chrome moly.

On separate occaisions, I broke both footpeg mounts off my '01 GasGas 300. I bought 4130 chrome moly wire from a welding supply shop. A friend of mine welded them back on with his TIG welder. So far the welds have held up.

The '06 footpeg mounting brackets are a much better design than the '01.

My pipe mounts have not broken yet.

My pipe mount broke on my 04 300 and I had a friend TIG weld it back on and it is still holding 1 year later. So to answer your question yes it can be fixed for a 12 pack of beer. Or that is what I payed for mine to be fixed.

chrome molly can be welded just like ordinary mild steel ,you can mig it, stick it or tig it, personally i would recomend you tig it using stainless steel electrodes/wire
