Crankshaft resistance
Hi all,
I'm putting my engine back together after a lower end rebuild and im installing the right side crank nut that holds the gear on. Before I torque the nut the crank spins freely, after torqueing it has a decent amount of resistance to it. The case halves are torqued to spec and I do not have the flywheel on the other side yet. Seems a little odd to me...anyone experience this??? The gasket kit I bought had 2 case gaskets in it, one thin and one thick. It had a thin one in it but I screwed it up putting the cases together and had to use the thicker one. This is an 05 ec250 with a roller bearing on the left and a ball bearing on the right. Once its torqued I have no linear side to side play in the crank. Any ideas....thanks! |

This is not normal. Sounds like something is binding. I had a similar experience with one of the gearbox shafts once. If memory serves me right, I had placed a shim in the wrong place.

I've not had to do a GG before. Common on cases with two ball races that you have to centre them with a sharp tap on the end (care taken with thread ends and soft metal as protection). Can't say this is your issue as Iddon'tkknow the setup well.

I kinda have it narrowed down. There is a spacer that slides thru the main seal and contacts the bearing. When I loosen the nut holding the gear it takes the tension off of the spacer and it stops rotating in the seal and the crank moves freely. If I tighten the nut by hand till the spacer get tension on it and begins to spin with the crank I get resistance. Same resistance either hand tight or torqued. It seems to be when the spacer is spinning in the main seal that it has resistance. I'm going to pull the gear and spacers off and re-assemble.

Did you lubricate the seal? If it is assembled bone dry there will be a lot of grip on the spacer.

Yes, but maybe not as liberally as I should have. Stopped by my local dealer today to pick up some marz fork bushings and he's thinking its just the seal grip without looking at it. I lubed it up again and its better. We talked through what might be binding and pretty much ruled everything out except the seal.
