Default How bad is this engine? Advice needed.

OK, I will show my ignorance here.

A guy has a 300 Wild (quad) motor that was run with out oil in the gas, and seized . He says "The rod broke causing the the piston to fry and damaged the cylinder walls..so it needs a rod, piston, and cylinder." But there could certainly be more wrong than that, couldn't there?

The crank bearings are lubricated by pre-mix, right? The tranny oil only lubricates the transmission in a 2-stroke engine, correct?

This is a counterbalanced engine. Does anyone know what lubricates the counterbalancer?

Trying to decide whether to purchase it cheap and re-build!

Thanks,

Jeff

Be cautious. Any time a rod breaks there's usually a lot of damage to the engine cases.

If the engine cases are not damaged, it is not the end of the world to rebuild this engine. The cylinder needs a new sleeve. You need a new rod. New crank bearings, and a piston, obviously.

You are correct in your assessment of how a two stroke works. Premix goes through the reed valve and is forced down into the crankcase, through the crank bearings (essentially), and then forced through transfer ports to the top of the cylinder where it is burned. All of your lube is in the gas (I now begin to make my case for 32:1 or greater premix ratio, but I'll bite my tongue).

Other than the cost of all of these parts, the rebuild process is fairly painless.
