I just cant get my bike to idle at a slow speed for more than 15 seconds before it dies, using the stock EC fly wheel & ignition. I have a LT jet kit, FMF Gnary Pipe, FMF muffler.
Ec ignition: I measured the voltage going out from the ignition stator coil and got 6.5 volts at a low idle. 9 volts at a fast idle. The measurement was using the black/red and the black/white wires. DE ignition: I measured the voltage going out from the ignition stator coil and got 12.5 volts at a low idle. 17.5 volts at a fast idle. Reading other postings I found that the EC is a 100watt ignition and the DE is a 30 watt ignition. I suppose the EC ignition is used to power all those lights and not the ignition coil. With the DE ignition and fly wheel the bike will idle at low speed and have a better pickup. Is the bike under powered to spin the EC fly wheel or is the voltage to low ? Can anyone verify the voltage on their bikes and post their results. Any comments would be appreciated. _____________________ 04' 300EC 98' KDX220R 83' XR200R |

From what I have heard - some bikes idle and some don't... Not necessarily an ignition problem. How much time do you have on your bike? Have you checked the reeds?
My bike had the larger ignition and would idle for a bit without dying - I doubt it would idle for a long time without loading up... jeff |

I just had the top & bottom rebuilt.
Just to test the spark output, I held on to the plug and grounded it to the engine. The spark was weak compared to my 98' KDX220R. On my KDX I could not hang on to the plug without being jolted. I checked all wire connections for corrosion. Maybe I need a new ignition coil or a boost kit? Maybe this is the problem people are having with jetting, it could be a weak spark. A weak spark would cause the bike to run on a smaller size jet, since a stronger spark would be needed to ignite a richer fuel mixture. |

Could this weak spark be attributed to corrosion on the ignition due to the leaky plastic ignition cover ?

Some have had trouble with a weak spark due to lack of a good ground contact. Check the ground wire attachment to the frame. Clean off corrosion and reattach. I would use a little dielectric grease to keep the oxidation at bay.

I rechecked all my ground connections, they all in good condition.
Can someone verify there spark if its weak, just by hand cranking the kick starter with the spark plug out. |
