Dunlop MX-51
Anyone here running a Dunflop MX 51 or a 31 rear tire? I have a skinny Michelin S12 on the back right now and after that wears out I want to change to something cheaper, and with more side knob traction.
I was looking at the MX51, MX31 and the Bridgestone M404. I already have a new Dunlop D773 for the front. I ride 75% sand.

Iv run the 130 S12XC and the 120 MX31, both work very well in the sand, I could climb decent sand hills from the bottom with little run up with the mx31. Both worked well on slippery clay and in muddy trash. I did find that the mx31 if run for too many hours would tear off side knobs, maybe ~20 hours. M400 series are also very good tyres imo, the rear seems to round off centre knobs fairly quickly, but the side knobs are sharp for a long time. Im currently running an S12XC rear and an M403 front, works superbly. All sets of name brand tyres cost the same for me so I use the ones that work the best, as is stands I really like the s12xc/m403 combo.

I've been running an MX51 120 on the rear for the last 700km give or take I'll post up a pic shortly but its pretty much shagged out. Side knobs still in good shape but mid has rounded off and worn down consistantly. No chunking at all running in mixed terrain. Mud/Sand/Rock. Its a solid performer all round and even when as worn as it is it still remains predictable which is something I value more than outright traction.
I'll be putting a new one on the back this week, and still undecided what to couple it with up front. I've been happy with the stocker. May try a Michy S12 front, or an MX31. I hear the 51 front isn't the best. |

Heres 2 pics. Ones a brand spanker on the 450. The other has the 700ish kms on the 300. As you can see its worn down but still in alright shape.

Thanks for the pics... The S12 I have on the rear now is the small 120-90-18 size, barely a 100 width compared to other brands.
It does work well in the woods but if you lean over too far the tire loses grip fast. I may end up with the MX51 and run the D773 on the front. As for now I still have the stock Michelin Enduro comp on the front. It seems to work well although it is getting worn down and rounded. I can tell that it is not holding the ground as well as it did when it was new. I do however have one old Michelin MP11 front that I got brand new years ago still in the shed. I will compare the two this weekend sometime.

In my experience the Dunlop MX51 goes away quickly. A good tire for one long ride really. After that, shot.
The MX 31 is a great tire. Lasts a reasonable amount of time, and has fantastic soft terrain traction. A great sand tire.

I tried the MX 51, it shredded quicker than a block of cheese at the Mexican restaurant.
Much happier with the MAXXIS SI. |

I'm putting an MX31 on the front today. Decided to get one more ride out of the rear before swapping it out. Think I'll probably go another MX51 on the rear. I found it rounded its edges quickly but it didn't lose too much traction in the process. Even now when well worn it hooks up ok and remains predictable. I don't ride alot of rock generally but this tyre has seen a few hundred kms of it which sped up the process as expected.
