The reliefs are there so the upper bush can twist/rock back and forth whilst the lower tube is flexing, especially when it is operating near the lower triple clamp.
Without the relief machined in the bush can't twist on the tube meaning when the fork tube flexes back and forth during compression/rebound the bush can/does bind on the upper tube causing harshness and more importantly wear.

Any updates on the new stacks Simmo?

Have you been inside the carts yet to see what rebound and MV comp stacks are?

I haven't looked at the mid and rebound, I'm happy so far, was supposed to ride today at cessnock but it got canned due heat and other commitments, hoping to ride somewhere on Sunday.

I put .46 and 5.6 springs in and with that stack I posted it feels unreal, as is the jetting, I'm gutted the ride was called off.

Cheers!

Same rebound piston valving

Reb

12.1
20.1(2)
18.1
14.1
11.25 collar

Mid

12.1
20.15(2)
11.2(2)
15.15
16.15
18.15
1.9mm gap for.65 float

I decided to try a shuffle first that makes it easy for everyone to do...so

Take I 20.15 from the mid and replace the 2 20.1s in the rebound with it, add one 20.1 above the remaining mv 20.15 and place the other at the bottom of the stack.

You get

Reb

12.1
20..15
18.1
14.1
11.25 collar

Mid

12.1
20.1
20.15
11.2(2)
15.15
16.15
18.15
20.1
1.9mm gap for.60 float

You can then wind in anywhere from 2.25 pfp up and you get the effect of the rebound bubble closing sooner and more effective reb in the early part of stroke with higher preload which means lovely grip!!! Still very plush and stays up in stroke, no dive at all when you chop the throttle and normal amounts when braking hard. I'll test it next week on a long ride and report back.

As Steve beane recommends, service the fork early. the stock oil is just ok and Iv had two bikes with these forks and neither were bled properly resulting in fast oil destruction, I use maxima 7wt blue bottle and it's the exact same cst and ultra high quality.

IMHO these forks need a minimum of 5mm of preload to work and one rate spring lower than you'd use on a 4t eg 220lb 4.6 they also like mv free bleed so your reb stack needs to get The clicker as open as possible for smooth mv action.
The shock is unreal.
