Default 2008 motor in 2004 Frame...is it a straight swap ??

Have got the chance of buying a spare EC300 (2008) motor C/W CDI.

Anyone know if this will fit straight into my 2004 frame without modification.

At first glance the CDI wiring look looks completely diffrent, but motor will come with the CDI so can't see that being a problem

It the rest of the loom compatible ?

Did this model have the switchable ignition map ?

Thanks guys.

It will not fit. The newer ('05+) cases without the CB hump have a different lower motor mount position.

Thanks Glen....just my luck..
am I right in thinking then that the 04 motor has a 'bulge' somewhere for a balance shaft but is not fitted with one..I can't find one on the parts fiche..presumably fitted to older model and discontinued for 03/04...??

All the guts from the 08 motor will swap into your cases. The main difference would be the tranny is considerably more robust in the 08. there were some problems with the 02 gears.

Bought the engine anyway...its a minter

Looking at the mounts, they seem identical to mine...I presume CB Hump is 'counter balancer' - the 2004 model doesn't have this as far as I'm aware...the crank cases look the same apart from a bulge under the clutch slave cylinder on the 08.

Where do I need to be looking before I start spannering ?

The lower motor mount is supposed to be moved slightly. Like PEB said, you can drop all the good stuff in the '04 cases. '04 trans was good, the older bikes had some plain bearing surfaces that were switched to needle bearings.

Glenn,
when you say 'supposed'...is this based on some experience, ..how much are we talking here ??

..the PCD's on the 04 and 08 motor look identical but it's hard to measure exactly with the 04 motor still in the frame.

AT some point the swingarm bolt changed. The pipe mounts may be a bit different as well.

No, I have not personally verified this motor mount change, but others here have or said they have, as this topic comes up now and then. Take some accurate measurements or actually try to fit the '08 motor in the frame. If by chance it does fit, we will make it a sticky and stand corrected.

Swingarm pivot changed dia. in '03, and I have had older bikes so I verified this.

I think you will be all set with just a small spacer on the motor mount bolt that is on the bottom near the shifter. I put an 04 motor in an 05 frame and if I remember correctly, I had to move the mount out to fit the 04 motor. Therefore, you should be able to use your 04 bolt and a spacer on the 08 motor and away you go.
