Silly question?
Hey guys,
I have my hid set up working and still need a headlight lense if anyone knows of one. My problem now is that the battery discharges to approx 2volts over one week. I have the floating ground mod on the stator and have done the setup as per baja designs setup( top one on the page). All is exact to the drawing but the light ground goes back to ground via the battery negative and then on to the chassis. That is , light ground goes to battery neg and then on to ground. Any ideas why I am having this problem? Also, I have bought a Led flasher unit and it has B,L and E written on it. As my system is full Dc , I assume that I hook the L to the feed for the leds( indicators), the B to the +12v and the E to chassis ground? Thanks for answering these stupid question for me, Mark |

What battery discharges to 2V?
If that's a 12V lead acid it sounds broke to me. You may want to check reg/rec and replace the battery. Maybe check the new one to see discharge rate in case something's leaking to earth somewhere. I connect mine up to an Optimate (battery conditioner) when not being used. |

I have one of those turn tech batteries.
I have started the bike and charged the battery back up to 12.8-12.9 and then disconnected the battery neg from the chassis ground and left it. It still registered 12.7-12.8 after about 4 or 5 hours. I think these batteries are lithium ion. Cheers Mark |

sounds like you have a draw,, put a test light inline to the batt cable and see if it lights when nothing is "on",, if it lights,, there is either a short or something drawing power when it shouldnt..

yes, that way the current (if you have a draw) flows through the test light

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go.
I can just use a globe and a couple of bits of wire even, can't I? Thanks again, Mark |

Ok,
Tried the test light technique and no test light lighting. This should mean my system is ok shouldn't it? The battery got charged off of the bike by running it for a bout 5 minutes yesterday to about 12.8 Volts and tonight the battery still had 12.67V. I have got in touch with Joe from turn tech and he is also interested in the outcome. He is very good to deal with and is really only interested in making me happy. As I said before the battery is awesome in every way except either something was drawing from it( which I have now proven that theory wrong), or there is unfortunately a problem with my battery. We (you and I) may have to go back and visit that "HOw to DC" thread once
more. Wence wrote: "All is exact to the drawing but the light ground goes back to ground via the battery negative and then on to the chassis. That is , light ground goes to battery neg and then on to ground." ----------------------------- Your problem may lie in this past sentence. I think GMP wrote something about not running the battery ground wire to the chassis, but, to keep a closed system for all the electrical connections to just the +12VDC and the (-) battery ground. I think I said that I too ran a ground a wire from my battery (-) terminal to chassis ground. I need to take another look at my set up this weekend. I do not have a static situation battery discharge problem like you do though. My bike can sit for weeks and the battery seems to hold it's charge. I an just curious to remember how I did mine, as I am planning to do the same mod to my 1990 KDX200 soon. If you do find the problem let us know, Thanks, Jeff |

Jeff,
You should be ok if you followed the top baja design diagram, as you did. The battery cannot be connected to the chassis if the stator has not had the floating ground mod done.If the mod has been done the other side of the rec/reg that feeds the lights etc can be grounded. Glenn may want to back back us up but I am almost positive this is the case. As I have checked the system with the test light and it didn't light up that tends to point to the battery. I am now about to trickle charge that and return it t o the bike and monitor it over 5 days to ensure no drop in voltage and then if voltage drops , repeat the process out of the bike. Obviously if it drops in both cases it is the battery , and only in the bike would point to the bike. We'll see. Cheers Mark |
