I run a 52T rear end in my 2005 RB-Modded (carb/squish) DE250 (9oz FWW). I think a 51T would work a bit better but I like not having to use the clutch much on most of our nasty, twisty hill climbs.

I rode Matt's 2011 300 SixDays with stock everything. It pulled harder everywhere than my perky 250. This was at 8,000 feet in Flagstaff last summer.

I suspect that I'll be reasonably content with the stock 48T rear, I'll consider the 49 or 50, just for experimentation purposes.

I didnt mind lugging the KTM300 as it was defintely smoother, the damn thing just wouldnt run cool unless you jetted it rich. Sounds as if the GG doesnt do that though and can handle lugging or revving?

The KTM 300 motors of the past that I bummed from friends and rode for a while (04, 05, 06, 07, 08) were (in my view) mostly luggers. That's changed some in the newer ones I've ridden (10, 11, 12). They're "respectably" revvy for the most part but the bottom is a bit much for me.

The GG 300 motor has always been more enduro tuned. More control. A little softer off the bottom. Quite a bit more revvy (for a 300) on top. With a BIG Gas Gas flywheel. The GG 300 almost feels like a bigger 250 to an extent. I haven't heard of a KTM300 having the same overheating issues for about three years or four years or so.

It seems to me that the GG brand motorcycles run a little cooler than the orange ones. It may be my prejudices showing through but that seems to be the case. The bikes will lug or rev.....doesn't matter which you want to do. The 300 lugs better to me though but I have much more time on the 300 than on the 250.

GGs absolutely run cooler, and rarely(almost never) boil. You see this all the time in south Jersey, orange bikes steaming at a reset after a long tight section.

A strong running 250 GG will lug down to zero RPM just like a 300, but it just won't pull as hard doing it.

I agree working a check point at a VCHSS race we sponsor I get to see what happens to some of the orange bikes; steam orangeaid. My GG to this point has never done so.

I only lost a small amount of coolant twice in ten years on three different GG250s. Once was from running a little lean, and the other was from a bad rad cap.
