Default How can I figure out exactly which model bike I bought??

Hello to all,

I purchased two gas gas motorcycles in the beginning of last summer one to ride and the second for parts. I was under the impression I purchased a 2000 250ec but I am not so sure anymore and when I asked the local dealer who used to sell gassers back in the day if he could tell me by the vin # the year and model he told me that I cannot go by the vin #'s because they were never correct back then ... Ok so I am in the process of doing a top end, cleaning the power valve ( never ever done barely moved ) and fixing all the other issues but I do not know what bike I even have to be able to order the correct parts??? Can someone please guide me ... I have been searching the forum for a while now but haven't figured out how to tell what bikes I have at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. they both have wire looms coming out at 10 o'clock position by the flywheel cover. I think at least one is pre-2000 because of everything I read on the forum about stamped #'s etc?.. Thank you ..

Don

Don,

There is a thread on de-coding the VIN # http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/sho...ghlight=decode

My bike is a 99 and it has a VIN and I know it reflect what the bike really is. There could be a case where someone has swapped out a frame and engine, meaning put a 250 in a bike that is was a 300 at one time, and vise a versa....

Wire at 10:00 should be a 2k2, if they were at 2 pm, then 2k3 if I am correct.

Pictures are worth a 1000 words, and more than likely you'll get some more help as well.

Good Luck!

the easiest way i have found... is photobucket..
upload image there, then copy and paste imgcode..

if you look at ricks 200... (sorry rick, but it is the nicest one i have seen)
http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/alb...&pictureid=404

and my 2001.. i had a 2000 and the only real difference in the body was the 01 has an air box door and a 2000 did not..

Wheelieman69,

I'm on the other side of rt 15 from you in Jefferson. When you get some pics up I can tell you exactly what you have. For now just email or iMessage to me, iPad is easy. It does have a 2K-2 ignition from your description so probably a '00 XC250 (I had one).

Welcome to the neighborhood. PM me your info and if I have time I can check your bike out. Let me know if you want to ride with us, hope you like rocks.

Tapatalk has been the best $1.99 app for my iPhone, I am sure they have a iPad app. That makes posting pics super easy!

It should be worth noting that with a GasGas, the different models mainly mean they have different goodies, with the exception of the stator. Other than that the only differences are the graphics and what goodies/suspension you got with the bike. The important thing to do is to understand what your bike has, and like they said above a pic is worth 1000 words. On the older bikes a vin may not mean much at all. Over the years you could have changed the stator from a 2k2 to a 2k3 or you could have swapped the ohlins forks for zokes or a sachs shock for an ohlins.
