Default Carb issues - Float bowl?

Hey,

Having trouble getting my '01 EC300 to idle.

Recently rebuilt the thing, only major differences from stock is a TrailTech Vapor and new full DEP pipe.

Upon kick starting the bike, i will get ignition and a couple of fires, but as soon as my foot hits the peg, the engine dies.
I have excess fuel leaking from the pipe header (which suggests my o-ring has also gone.) and some smoke.

Every time i attempt this i have to remove the plug due to flooding.

I have been fiddling with the throttle slide screw and pilot jet, although i wouldnt have thought this would actually stop the bike from running with me on the throttle?

Im going to whip off the back end and have a look at the carb float bowl as a freind suggested my float may be stuck?

Does anyone have any solutions?

5 turns out on idle screw is a lot. when you're inside the carb, take a look at when the screw contacts the slide. it's closer to 3 turns out till it even contacts the slide. yours may be slightly different, but i've never been able to go more than 3.5 turns out and contact the slide.

the symptoms you describe generally point to: too high of a float, float needle failure, or possibly plugged vent/overflow lines. make sure the overflow line is clear, and if carb dribbles fuel out overflow when on side stand, float level is too high.

My '01 had carb issues and would not idle and fouled plugs every ride. I went through the carb and cleaned it, spent a lot of time setting the float bowl hieght. Then set the the air screw at 1.75 turns out. The idle was set just so it would idle (I don't remember how many turns out, but I think it was 2.5 to 3).

My bike will idle easily now. I also did change the packing on the muffler as mine was packed full of oil.

If I foul a plug now it is once every 8-10 rides. The bike is a lot crisper and more snappy off idle then it ever has been.

Thanks for the input guys.

Im going to start with checking the overflow pipes and get the idle and pilot screw in to the correct amount of turns.

I have a feeling that wont make a difference, in which case ill have the carb up and out to check the problem areas you guys suggested.
I did notice a sticky with setting your float height...
Have you guys got any tips for the work im about to do?

Thanks

all very simple stuff - use a hair dryer to soften the airbox boot, makes carb removal/re-install much easier.

spend some time getting float height right. and check and make sure float needle is stopping flow..

Again, thanks for the tips...

I eventually worked out the problem. And its pretty embarrasing

When working on the bike i had plugged up the bottom of the airboot to stop dust and what not geting in. I'd actually forgotten to remove this and it had just been sat there chokeing off the air supply...

Removed the kitchen towl, problem solved...

ALTHOUGH! The idle and pilot screw tips really helped with the set up.

Thanks again guys

I fiddled with my 03 carb allot I had the same issues.I tried all the tricks and never did get it to run right. No matter what I did with the pilot jet or idle\air screw the bike would run rich and never idle . So I got pissed at it and sent it to RB designs. I am glad I sent it because I would have never known that the carb was toast .Got a new carb with the RBD mods and problem solved. But one of the big things I over looked was the tower that holds the float bowl pin was wore out. I just thought the pin holding the float was supposed to be a little loose.
