Default rear brake puck...which direction does it go??

I'm rebuilding the rear brake on a 2002 ec250. The puck I removed had the concave part showing to the outside of the caliper (touching the back side of the brake pad) and the flat part to the inside of the caliper. Is this the correct direction for the rear puck to be installed? I would expect the flat part of the puck to push against the pad instead of the concave part. Any help is appreciated.

Every caliper I've done has the flat part toward the brake fluid.

If the other way it would be a huge air pocket...

the puck you refer to is a piston, and the compression force is the fluid coming from the master cylinder. flat part in.
