Key Removal

Has any one removed the keyed ignition switch from 2011 EC250e? Would like some ideas on how you did it.

I moved mine to the right side of the upper tree so that I could put the trailtech vapor on. I have an EC, so I still need something to kill the drain on the battery.

I just would like like to get rid of the key and just have a start button and a engine kill switch.

There are two pairs of wires to consider for the ignition switch hookup:

The first is Yellow/Black and Yellow/Green. These ground the ignition when the key is OFF. Leave them unconnected so the bike will run. This grounding is why you can't kickstart the bike with the key off.

The second is Red/Black and Red. These power the multifunction switch so the start button will operate. Put a toggle switch between them or wire them together using a male/female spade connector so you can open the circuit if needed. You could just make a jumper to go between them in the wiring plug.



If you are going to replace the multifunction switch with separate buttons you need to do some work at it's wiring connector. I can tell what to do. Will you need to have a switch for turning the lights ON or OFF? I built a new harness for my XC250E and made some notes as I went.

To hookup your separate switches, you can connect as follows:

Engine Start - White/Black connects to Red using a normally open push button

Engine Kill - Yellow/White connects to Yellow/Green using a normally open push button

These are the wires in the connector/plug for the multifunction switch.



If you want to operate lights, add the following:

Low Beam - Yellow to White
High Beam - Yellow to Blue

A single pole three position toggle switch with center off will be fine. Yellow goes to the common terminal.

Well, I may be trying this shortly, I busted my multi-function switch last weekend. guess a trip to RatShack is in order for switches and ktm for the momentary buttons.

I used two radio shack buttons. This one in black (#275-06440) http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2062508 and the same in red (#275-0646).

Black one on the right handlebar for start, red on the left handlebar for kill. Took a while to make up some mounting brackets, but the final results were good. I'll take some photos the next time I get the bike out. Note that these buttons are just basic units with no sealing.

Motorcycle switches are usually not sealed; they have drain holes to let water out and the internals are coated in grease. I used a switch from Sicass Racing for the lights and horn. http://sicassracing.com/store/switch...1763274fff2fb6

Neil, I have a KTM shop right by the house, I am pretty sure their start/kill buttons will work. I have not figured out how to kill the power to the battery yet, I don't want too many swiches stuck around

I bought a combined KTM start/kill switch; I couldn't mount it in a position I was happy with so I didn't use it. The separate Husaberg/KTM round buttons should work really well for you.

Once I get a photo of mine you'll see how compact the Radio Shack buttons are. This was only important because I've got a lot of stuff on my bars. I was able to get the start button right beside the throttle so I can get my thumb on it without shifting my hand position.
