Default 2011 300- broken first gear

It seems a tooth from the first gear cog was stuck to the drain magnet at last oil change. I've raced 2 enduros now with this issue, staying away from 1st gear and it rides fine. I accidentally went into first a few times rolling up to the restarts and it makes a clicking noise but other than that seems ok.

I know I need to fix it but wondering how long you can ride a bike like this without damaging anything further. I assume the cases need to be split to change the gear out?

The urgency of the repair depends on what else is damaged inside, and the only way to know that is to split the cases.

If the tooth chunked off intact and all by itself, you could run almost indefinitely, but if it jammed another tooth or there is swarf floating around you risk further, possibly catastrophic damage.

Can you guys give me an idea if what is involved and about how much a shop would charge? I've never had trans problems before in 20 years of racing.

How much a shop would charge depends on labour, which depends on how you present them with the issue.

If you are mechanically competent, and able to get the engine out, then give them just the engine.

Maybe an hour or so to split the cases and get the offending gear out, then likewise an hour for reassembly. Also, IMO, thats a pretty generous estimate for a competent bike mechanic with a clean engine and all the correct tools at their disposal.

If you bought the bike second hand, then you never really know how it was treated previously. It could also just be a defective gear, its not a well documented issue.

I am mechanically competent but time challenged. I used to be able to do my own wrenching but pay others to do it now. I did buy the bike pre owned but the trans was fine, I must have broken it shifting down from revving false neutral entering a hill climb while racing. When I get the "red mist" anything can happen!

FYI I ended up replacing the gear, the shift fork, and all the top end stuff+ crank was about $1500. Now she is like new!
