Default 2003 ec250

is the spacer between the 2 rear wheel bearings reqd??
is it to stop the inner bearing drifting outwards and rubbing on the outer bearing?

No.

It's to keep from imparting a high axial load on the bearings when you tighten the axle.

Since it has the step in it I guess they don't want the outer rims touching.
Probably not a big deal but I wouldn't experiment with not using it. jmho
