12 300 Gearing Question
Hey everybody when I picked up my bike it had a 13/49 gearing. I'm just now getting around to changing out the sprockets and chain. I wanted to pick up a steel rear sprocket but could only seem to find a 48 or 50 tooth rear. I went with the 48 so now i'll have a 13/48 gearing. Any thoughts on this? I figured I could use a little more top end and since the bike is such a beast down low already I wouldn't lose much there. Maybe this would make the bike a bit more controllable too.
I'm a noob to sprockets but I ordered the same 112 link chain on there already, as I found i could drop a link if it doesn't fit. So does anyone think i'll find a noticeable difference losing one tooth on the rear? Or will I just be over analyzing it next time i ride? Any advice on the chain? Edit:I did find a 49 tooth steel sprocket but i'm still curious about just changing 1 tooth on the read and how the gasgas responds to it. Last edited by GLantern; 06-15-2014 at 09:52 PM. This:
1 tooth on the rear is probably similar to the difference in overall gearing between a brand new rear tire and the same tire when it's due for replacement. |

I usually run 13/ 47 as I like a bit more linear controllable power but I have just finished the Finke desert race here in Oz using a 13/ 43 combo.
This was pushing the limits of drive in sand and it took a fair bit to get it motoring in top gear. Once there it was noticeably quicker though. Cheers Mark

I guess it depends how much you notice things as to how much you notice it.
If anything you may find yourself kicking back to 1st in a few places were 2nd would have previously done the job. More than likely it will be quite subtle though. I ride quite a few techy singles so my preference is to run around 13/50 and use 2nd and up for everything bar turning around on the spot. |

13/48 is stock gearing on my '14 300 and it's perfect for singles. I hardly use 1st unless it's very steep/techy. 2nd and mainly 3rd in the flowier singles. I do lug my bike though.
