Default 2015 e start revisited.

Hi All,

I?ve got a 2015 ec250 and can?t for love nor money get the electric start working, despite trying all sorts. I have pulled the bendix out and it?s clean, works as it should and doesn?t appear to be anything wrong.

When I hit the start button. The bendix flings out engages with the ignition gear but then makes the most awful, hi pitched squeal I?ve heard. It does not turn the motor over.

I?m left thinking it must be one of two things, either one of the gears on the bendix spinning on the bendix shaft or the flywheel spinning on the shaft, if that?s even possible?

I have tried to replicate the former by putting one end of the bendix in a vice and trying to spin the top which I was unable to do.

I should add that the engine starts and runs perfectly off the kicker.

Thanks for the reply. unfortunately, the 2015 bendix is different to the earlier model that can be swapped with the SMU5009 scooter bendix.

Hi! Make sure you have a good battery. I unboxed my bike this winter and it made a simlilar whining noice. Sounded real bad.

New well charged battery and it sprung to life!

Low on power combined with old grease made it not turn the starter quick enough is my guess.

Fojjer is right, the bendix needs a good kick to cam out quickly. Spread the unit open and wash it out with brake cleaner or solvent. Then oil it completely with a light motor oil. Jump your bike battery with a car battery and see how it performs.

Default good morning

hello, I have this problem too, have you solved it?
the grease in the teeth of the bendix should be put or does it slip?

ive had to grind back, weld and then machine the thick end of the bendix (the end that is located in the outer cover) as it was spinning the inner shaft of the bendix inside the outer housing that has the cast in fine gear.
This can be checked by gripping the outer (fine) bendix gear in a vice (with plastic jaw protectors) then seeing if the gear that contacts with the flywheel gear can be turned (a well worn one will turn by hand, one with a fresh problem may need vise grips to turn to find the problem.)
Hope this helps!

Light grease is OK on the teeth; the inside workings are better with oil. Nocams is describing testing the "sprag" elements. Worns sprags will slip, new ones will cam into engagement and drive properly. The sprags are inside the cover and are held by the "gathering spring".

Neil,I've been described before by many as very 'over the top' with my maintenance regime, but with 400 hrs(and nil starter probs besides worn brushes at 280hrs) on my 2015 ec300, I've always use white grease on both ends of the bendix, gun oil or any light oil in the sprag section after a good quick cleaning of the running surfaces.I also pull the starter up and drop 3 drops of gear oil on the top crown wheel bearing,it soon finds its way down to the next bearing and gear shaft. I've seen a mates starter give trouble with broken bendix, an elongated hole for the bendix in the outer cover, flogged out crownwheel bearings, worn gear shaft, burnt brushes and commutator from a lack of maintenance.
5 minutes work after every 3 rides is all it takes to keep everthing nice and slippery in the starter department.

Hi,

I just upgraded my e-start on the 2014 gas gas to the 2017 model. Mine made a hell of a noise when first using it and the motor was getting hot. If the bendix is too tight in the bushes in the engine case it will bind and won't have the inertia to "fly out". I removed the bendix, dabbed some light grease in the bush and its fine.

Incidentally - if anyone wants to know how to fit a 2017 e-start to a 2014 ec300 (i.e. replace the rubbish unit) without changing the crank case get in touch. I designed a spacer ring and have a drawing I can send of the part to be machined.

Regards,

Gary (UK)
