8v is not good. You should 12v+ at the starter when you engage the starter switch.

The dreaded starter motor curse has struck , first started acting up at around 40 hours.....soldiered on for another 10 hours and now having to kick it as nothing at all from the starting system apart from a click from the solenoid

Have starter motor off and want to dismantle. Can anypne confirm what spanner / socket i need to use on the srarter motor through bolts? 6 mm seems too big , 5 mm is too small!

Am I missing something here?

Yep. A 5.5mm socket.
I think you can get by with an imperial equivalent though.

Default Bendix cover exploded!

Hi fellas,
I'm trying to get the starting sorted on my 2nd hand 2018 300 - Factory fixes have already been completed on it but it still wasn't starting so...

I have just replace all things starter related (including ignition sprocket) apart from ignition (stator?) cover.

Long story short, the brand new Bendix cover (from Rieju with bearing) apparently explode in the shop when they tried to start the bike under load. The bendix apparently pushed back with enough force to do this!

1. Has anyone heard of this occurring before?

I'm being told there may be an issue with the ignition cover and the Bendix alignment (this is from the Australian importer) and I now have 2 options - new ignition cover or Rieju have modified cover that houses the bevel/helical gears and bendix and other stuff in an oil filled single unit.

2.a) Has anyone heard of this miss-alignment before?
2.b) Has anyone heard or seen this single unit option?
2.c) Has there been any feedback or reviews on the single unit?

I've only just started riding (other than on farm bikes years ago) and love it but if feel like this 2018 is breaking up with me (no pun intended).

3. Should i stick it out or upgrade?

Bins.

I cannot understand how the cover could have been damaged. It may have been assembled incorrectly....perhaps something got wedged in the bearing housing part of the cover.

My Rieju cover fit perfectly & was not misaligned.

I have no knowledge of the oil filled cover.

I am using a FirePower #490 2500 120cca lithium ion battery. It does not have enough power to start the bike after sitting for a few days. I kick start it once & the the starter works fine for the entire ride.

My son has the same bike. He uses an AntiGravity #YTZ7-8 240cca lithium battery. He does not have the upgraded Rieju cover. 40+ hours on the bike. Battery has enough power to start the bike w/o first kick starting.

Hope this helps!!

They may have not transferred the dowel pins over to the new cover.

Thanks Tech!

The shop has said a new engineered starter enclosed system is coming in a couple of weeks....no more info that that.

I've had new 240 CCA lithium and lead acid batteries and it's still locked up so I don't think it's power as such.

I do think there is something with the alignment of the pinion and Bendix as the recess' are worn. The screw holes (sorry for poor tech language) for the bendix cover were all chopped out and I had to put coil inserts to hold the cover on!

I can replace the housing but think I will see what the cost of the "complete package" is first.

I'll let you know what happens and hopefully a photo of the new cover...

Default No real silver bullet!

So the fix was a little different to what I had envisaged.

Ultimately Rieju put the package together - ignition cover, helical gears, pinion, bearings etc - and sent it to the shop for install. They also sent a new starter and bendix and it's now a wet mod - and that's it!

The mechanic noticed that the helical gears spun much more freely than previously and while I did try and start it cold one morning, it didn't start but once warm, kicks over beautifully.

I've not been riding too much unfortunately but hopefully it'll last for many years...
