That pesky swingarm bolt

I've taken the shock and forks out to have them R&R-ed by PaloVerde Suspension here in Phoenix tomorrow. While I'm in there I'd like to grease the bearings front and rear. For some reason the swingarm bolt won't budge.

I see the welded stop on the right side which means that the bolt has to go out to the left side. But on the left side is a very small opening, perhaps blocked by a bearing or seal.

How does one deal with this? My .pdf manual doesn't show an exploded view of this area.

Thanks in advance for not calling me a dummy (or other derisive derivations of same).

Bolt goes out the right side, the welded stop is just to prevent it from turning.

Remove the nut on the left side, and drive it out right.

I used a two armed puller to get some tension on the bolt, and smashed the hell out of it with a 2kg (4 lbs) hammer. Took me a good two hours to get it out.

Do a search on swingarm bolt, this has been up for discussion before.

I just replaced the swing arm bearings.

You need to loosen the linkage that goes from the frame to the rocker arm and then to the motor swing arm bolt. Use lots of penetrating oil and have patience. Also, leave the nut on the end of the swing arm bolt. Thread it to the end and just pass the bolt end. This protects the threads and gives you a surface to use a dead blow hammer on. You don't want to damage the threads on the bolt.

Another trick I did was to put a bag of ice on the motor right above the swing arm axle. I'm not sure if that helped but it did poop right out. Don't waste your time unless you loosening the linkage.

Loosen motor mounts too if its stuborn.

Anti seize everything and life will be easy next time.

My KDX was a piece o-cake compared to this.

I'll give it a go tonite. But if I'm pounding on that thing for 15-minutes (let alone 2-hours), I'm going to button it all up and take it to a shop (where my suspenders are right now.

Time to start another thread about that...

You still can't get it apart?

You may need to take the weight off the swing arm axle. I lifted the swing arm up and over to one side or another. I used tie downs and hooked them to the pegs, shock tower and ceiling.Try that and see if that works.

I didn't get around to it last nite. Wrenching on other things last nite.
