ec300 06 front sprocket loose on countershaft splines
Anyone had problems with excessive wear of splines on countershaft where sprocket fits. Just rebuilt engine, (failed main bearings) and when fitting new sprocket noticed there seems to be a lot of slack between two components. Dont really want to tear down engine again to fit new shaft. Had an 03 450 a couple of years back and that had same issue, might expect it for older bike but this 06 not done much work. Laid up 2 years and trail ridiing only befoe I go it. Any ideas? Maybe thats how they are? Tried 2 new sprockets and both same, visually splines don't look worn either.
Any info appreciated |

hillbilly, maybe this will help as it's all I found of your description by doing a search for "sprocket" http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/sho...light=sprocket

What kind of sprocket is it? I had that issue with the Ironman and won't use them. I also found that the Renthal and Talon fit much better and wear just as long.

Jostby,
No worries, I was not trying to be a short with hillbilly, it's just that so many questions come up that have been already been discussed in other threads. If a member or new members were to perform a search on the question they could very well find information and answers to other questions as well. Thanks

gents
thanks for the input from all. Had actually searched subject and seen that a few others had same issue and I have come to conclusion that for time being trying locitite fix some have done may keep me going until I can face stripping down to replace shaft. I was more interested in the reason than the fix in a way. Been riding 30 years and never had this with any other bike and last 2 gassers had same problem! Well aware of chain tension issues and grit in splines being possible causes etc but dont think I'm that bad at looking after my bike. Just made me doubt the quality of shafts hence asking to get an idea of how much of a common problem it is. Love gassers to ride but dubious quality in some areas makes you question eveything. Buy some 271 and 638 loctite when I get home from offshore, (yes away for Christmas so not happy) and try that. Have my doubts it will hold for long with the constant snatching from drive. |

Not sure what was on there when I bought bike but had Talon on for last year or so. Very little use, maybe once a month and mostly trails. swap between 14T and 13 T depending on amount of road work I am doing and how tight the riding off road. Assume you fitted new shaft at some point after wear issues? Presume you've had no problems since? Wonder if quality control on shaft dimmensions a bit shaky in the past and certain bikes landed up with out of tolerance shafts which would lead to premature wear or just slack as old boots from day one. |

Ironman, while a very durable sprocket, fits somewhat sloppy. It also needs shimming. My '07 is like this too but the splines are OK. The Talon on my '12 is trash already after 50 hrs. I'm just going to use another Talon or Sprocket Specialists, have never tried their countershaft sprocket.

I'm OK with 50 hours out of a front sprocket. Given what you ride out east it's one of the hardest working parts of the bike.
