Default water crossing

i notice in a lot of pics, that a lot of riders wheelie over water. is this a safety thing, trying to keep water out of engine and or person, or is it more of a technical thing? when u hit water, it slows you down, so if you hit it in a wheelie, does it try to force the nose down? or does the wheelie help offset the drag from the water? i still suck at wheelies either way, i can pop over something when i need, but i cant seem to ride one out for my life.

There's also the fact that the water is obstructing your vision of the actual ground underneath. You dont want to smack your front wheel into something that'll make you fall.
