The switch to the CDI box changes (advances or retards) the timing of when the coil fires. Same as moving the pulse generator to change spark timing. The effect is to change engine power delivery characteristics for different types of going - 'sun' on the switch for aggressive and 'rain' for softer.

so are u telling me the switch I removed didn't kill the engine it just changed performance.. or are u saying it killed it slower then just cutting spark straight away like a kill switch? ??

Performance, nothing to do with killing the engine.

the overall performance is pretty much the same with the map switch on or off, i guess without the switch it will be fixed in one state (either rain or sun) and that i cannot answer

rain mode is slightly tamer and puts the power to the ground better, and sun mode is more mx type of power, quicker revving and sooner (these are mild changes so dont think it will be like comparing an xr200 with a cr500!)

how would one tell if the map switch was working correctly. .?? just ride and feel for changes in performance? ? im going to rewire the switch back in anyway just to try it again. .any suggestions in how to test it will be appreciated. .

The little red button switch on the bars is the kill switch mate.
