Default Don't ever trust a GG reserve!

I have been doing the GG thing now for a bit over a year I guess. Back last fall my son and I were riding and he ran out of fuel. No biggie, I would just move her over to reserve. Ouch, nothing. I did a little figuring and came to the conclusion that maybe the fuel lever was just a little passed "on" toward reserve. I did a little experimenting and found you will get fuel flow if the lever is just half way to on (or maybe just a bit more), so from then on I was careful to never have my gas fully on. So Friday I was going to run out and walk this new trail I was wanting to add to my loop. I knew I didn't have much gas, but I made sure it wasn't all the way on, so I figured I would be fine. Well,, cut to the chase, I ran out of gas. Switched her over to reserve, nothing. Looked down, ouch, no gas. Again, my lever was not all the way on. Lucky I was just a bit over a mile from home, so no huge deal.

Moral of this story, do not trust a Gasgas for reserve!!!!

Mine works fine.I have had to use it two times in the 1 1/2 years and its a MC 250. It only leaves you about 1 cup of fuel and that don't get you far.

I would take the petcock off and see if you mite have a bad o-ring or something in it.

I too have had to use mine.
There is definitely not much in the tank though when switching to reserve, 10 k's or so.
Cheers Mark

Well, like often happens with mechanics, something else made it look like the reserve was screwed up. I had a float that was cocked in my carb. When the bike ran out of gas I switched to reserve and sat there for a few seconds waiting for the carb to fill back up. When it did it started overflowing and some went into the engine flooding it, so no start. I just thought the gas hadn't gotten in there yet so I just kept kicking while I guess the gas just kept running into the engine and overflowed to the ground (I was literally in grass as tall as me, remember I was cutting a new trail, and I didnt see it). When I finally looked in my tank it had all ran out. I still say its best not to turn the gas all the way on, because they will use reserve if you go just past on slightly.

I have always worried about that problem, of reserve being open when you don't want it to be. Can another style petcock be swapped in?

10k is not too far off. When my son had to switch to reserve he checked and I think he made it about 8 miles, so I think that is around 12k, but he was taking it very easy taking only roads and trying to stretch it (obviously!) the best he could. He ran out yards from home

Like I said, the best thing you can do is just not let it go all the way to on (well, the best thing to do is make sure you have plenty of fuel!). If the lever is ever so slightly past straight down it will allow it to drain from reserve, or it did on my sons bike. I keep it about 75 degrees on, if that makes any sense.
