Default Cleaning fork tubes

On other bikes, the plastic covers for the fork tubes are open on the back side. Lots of room to slide a rag in and clean the tubes. On the GG the back side is mostly closed. I don't see the access improving much even with the latches pushed open. How do you get at the fork tubes?

In the past I've put WD40 on a clean rag and pulled it around to clean off the hard water spots or slight dirt left behind after washing. I'd rather not undo the three mounting screws per side plus the cable clamp just to get the covers off (each time I clean the bike).
