I seem to recall thinking I had done a good thing by opening up the whole unit. YMMV I don't remember the rivet size - medium fat... -Dean 2001 xc300

This image is after cleaning. Those little holes on the spark arrestor were fairly plugged.
Or, it's more like they were covered over. Imagine fiberglass where spooge is the bonding resin. Soaking in a parts cleaner might have done the job, but I don't have that available.

Do you have a dial caliper? You could just mic the hole and thickness of the two pieces and go get that size from the hardware store.

I just blaze mine with a MAP gas or propane torch and use a wire brush to scrub it.

I had the same on my old 250 - poked every single one of those holes clear with a bradawl - and got one hell of a blister on my palm!

No point in re-packing without clearing all those holes. wire brush usually does it.
