Default Piston slap

I bought a used 2011 300ec with an estimated 70 hrs on it. I took the pipe off and examined the piston and cylinder walls with a led flashlight. Cylinder still has cross hatch marks and piston shows no signs of scoring below rings. I did manage to put my finger in the exhaust port and found play in the piston from side to side. My question is, should I put a new piston and rings or just rings and a new piston after that set of rings? Top end is original. Thanks

Both. You will be done for another 70. Cheap $200 insurance policy and you will love the "new" power. Check the port timing and send the head to RB Designs while you are at it.

Sounds normal to me.That play is the piston to bore clearance.Even new they're like that.
Keep riding.

I did ride it, but the sound of the piston slap concerns me. Don't want to create any preventable damage.

You sure its piston slap.Unsual for that low hour.Ime piston slap is generaly heard when the engine is in over run ie no load, mild revs, engine braking condition.
If at any time the wrong oil mix(low, none)has been used, piston slap will happen at any hour.

check the pv arm inside the clutch case, mine made quite a noise as it hit the case when closed & vibrated. plenty of threads about it & some you tube clips.
